Hermione was born into a family of artists, and grew up immersed in fine art. She studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art, followed by an MA in Textile Design at the Royal College of Art. She co-founded the design studio "South West Eighteen," which became "The collection" in 1982. Carline’s designs have been sold throughout Europe, Japan and the USA, including sales to Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin, and Ralph Lauren. Continuing in the fashion industry until 1995, Carline then left the fashion world to bring up her family before returning to her roots in painting in 2004. During this time she opened her own studio teaching art to adults and young people.
Carline’s work is a fusion of the myriad of experiences we absorb in a single day and a lifetime. Photography, drawings from life, watercolour, oil, mixed media and montage are all important components in Carline’s practice. The essence of her ideas are formed by sifting through and layering photographs and drawings, which in turn lead to her finished work. Her technique is to make drawings from her observational photographs of places and also people that she knows. These drawings then take on new meanings and abstractions as she works to form the narrative composition. The images might be overlapped or juxtaposed, placing contradicting ideas within a single work. Reality is often distorted and figures placed out of their original context.
“My inspiration is taken from the visual world around me, whether this is the extraordinary beauty of a vast uninhabited landscape, the bustle and energy of a city scene, or just an ordinary street corner in Suburbia. I am also interested in the ways in which women often define themselves through their personal experiences, the people they meet, or by the images they are exposed to through the media. I am interested in the ever-changing world of fashion, and the evolving ‘ideal’ of the female body and how this is expressed, whether seen on fashion models, mannequins, through advertising or real life. It is the superficiality of these that I find fascinating, and the way that we can absorb every one of these experiences in a single day. It is the fleeting and transitory nature of the world we live in that I am trying to capture in my pictures.”
